New York Times Journalist Needs a Math Tutor

New York Times journalist Mara Gay may not be a politician, but she's a liberal political commentator who doesn't miss an opportunity to disparage conservatives -- and that makes her fair game in our book! 

According to Gay's New York Times bio, she has a degree in political science from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. However, judging  by this stupid quote, she could benefit from a remedial math course.

The Quote:

 "... with the money he spent,  he could have given every American $1 million dollars... It’s true!"

The Reality

$500 million divided by 327 million Americans is about $1.53 per person.

Context:

During a television appearance on MSNBC, Gay enthusiastically shared the following tweet from freelance journalist @MakitaRivas about Bloomberg's ad spend in 2020.

"Bloomberg spent $500 million on ads. The U.S. population is 327 million. He could have given each American $1 million and still have money left over. I feel like a $1 million check would be life-changing for most people. Yet he wasted it all on ads and STILL LOST." 

Despite the obvious bad math, Gay praised the tweet as "true" and called it "disturbing." Surprisingly, Brian Williams, the MSNBC host interviewing Gay, didn't catch the glaring error. 

What's worse is Joe Biden and Donald Trump actually spent more on advertising than Bloomberg during the 2020 cycle.

Update:

MSNBC released the following statement about the debacle:

“Tonight on the air we quoted a tweet that relied on bad math. We corrected the error after the next commercial break and have removed it from later editions of tonight’s program. We apologize for the error.”
